Experience

Scott Holdren co-founded Sitening in 2005 after 12 years of professional IT experience. Scott has been a strong advocate for Free and Open Source Software throughout his career, and is now dedicated to bringing the benefits of FOSS to the enterprise.

For more than a decade I've been a part of the Open Source software movement, starting with my introduction to Perl and Apache in 1995. Since then I have worked continuously to bring the power and flexibility of FOSS to small and medium-sized businesses.

Having spent the earlier part of my career doing development and administration for internet service providers, I have extensive experience with network architecture, security, and capacity planning. By applying this knowledge to web site development, I can ensure that sites will grow and succeed for the businesses that depend on them.

Philosophy

I start by listening. I strive to learn from all people involved in the project, considering all relationships between a business' employees, customers and processes. It's important to think about the business as a whole when designing Web software, even when areas seem unrelated to a project. I treat each software project as an opportunity to improve existing processes as well as creating new ones. By putting everything on the table, the final product can have the greatest impact.

My architectural mantra has always been to keep it simple. This applies equally to the creation of new systems and fixing existing ones. As I design applications, I lean towards an architecture that requires the least amount of coaxing from the computer and the database. Programming languages and database servers have an innate tendency to store and manipulate data. The further we stray from how the computer operates, the more likely we are to have problems. In most cases, the easiest method for the computer is the best method for us and our data. It makes the code smaller, the database easier to manage, improves performance and it gives the project a solid foundation for scaling and extending it in the future.
