Experience
Born in Knoxville, TN and raised in the suburbs of everywhere, I came to Nashville in 1996 to learn Sound Engineering and Music Business at Belmont University. Realizing that I was a good piano player and a horrible sound engineer, I went back to school at Watkins College of Art & Design to study graphic design. After three years at Watkins, I decided to focus on Web design.
I've been designing for the Web for about seven years. I interned in the Web department at Echo Music, which led to a job doing illustration for Design-her Gals (the pencil tool and I became good friends). While doing that, I also did various freelance designs for Offbrand Music, Cryogen Second, WRVU's Songs and Fascinations and Triumvirate Pictures.
Philosophy
Design — "Concept is your friend, but if something looks cool for no reason, that's fine too." The program at Watkins is concept-centered, but that doesn't mean that an element has no place in a design just because there's not a bigger idea behind it. Sometimes things just look good because they look good, and you have to let the design tell you that something should happen. Figuratively, that is. My computer doesn't actually talk to me. The other design philosophy: just because you use a computer doesn't mean that the computer is your only tool. Cameras, paint, chalk, stencils, quill pens, and puppies are also fair game. I'm kidding about the puppies. Mostly.
Web — "Being artsy doesn't excuse you from being coherent." In other words, sites should also be easy to navigate and not take forever to load. It doesn't matter how cool things look if people get frustrated and leave the site.
